Derek Jarman’s apocalyptic fantasy sees Queen Elizabeth I (with the help of an alchemist played by Richard O’Brien) travel centuries into the future to find Britain on the brink of collapse. With established actors playing alongside recognisable punk figures, Jarman successfully tapped into the same feelings of anger, disillusionment and nihilism that The Sex Pistols articulated in the contemporary music scene.
